I am 28 years old and work as a jobbing sailor and commercial skipper. I grew up on Windermere and was taught to sail by my Dad, I’ve been pottering around in boats ever since. I have had Calypso, my first yacht, for about a year and in that time have sailed 1900 miles in her, mostly single-handed and offshore. She’s a great little boat. My first trip to the Azores went wrong a third of the way there, as my deep-sea seal started to leak and I turned home. At the time of writing I am half-way through a delivery from Plymouth to Panama City on a 40’ yacht. My partner (and co-skipper) Alexandra and I have been sailing together ever since I bought Calypso, we work well as a team and don’t seem to argue half as much as I thought we would!
Co-Skipper Profile
I’m Alex, Joe’s other half and the other half of Calypso’s (Or Callie, as we know her) crew. I’ve been sailing all my life as my parents had boats from when I was a baby, and my Grandparents too, in fact they’ve still got one. I’m a professional musician and also work in a great little bookshop in Plymouth (University Bookseller) and that little plug will hopefully convince my boss to give me the time off to race!! The Guitar is going too, so we’ll all have to have a sing-song in the bar in Ponta Delgada! I know Callie is small compared to a lot of the fleet, but she’s fast and sturdy for an older boat and I have no doubts of her ability to put in a good performance and to get us safely there and back. We are fundraising for Help for Heroes, please have a look at our site at www.bmycharity.com/CalypsoAZAB.
